Bill Evans - Alone

No one knows
better than the player
how the left hand
is only an imitation of the bass.

Sunshine appears twice,
but never laughter.
He is too serious,
the critics say:

whimpering through
a rainy day
as though it were
a terrible flood.

The rhythm is
uncomfortably accurate.
Listeners should know
they are intruding,

how difficult it is
to speak.
