They are like a chorus
of children, only
it is always

a rehearsal: they flirt,
knock scores to the
hardwood floor

stab each other
with pencils,
untie shoes

wait for a cue
that will come they
don’t doubt

like mothers about
six o’clock in
the parking lot.
